Council approves street closures for Lions car show

Planning for the 2012 Lions Club car show in the historic business district took a step in the right direction on Tuesday with the city council’s approval of street closures in the uptown area. The streets will be closed temporarily to vehicle traffic on the day of the show and will reopen that evening to accommodate restaurants and their patrons.

School to bid on HVAC work

The St. James School District is moving quickly on getting an HVAC contract for the middle school. Creative Construction Solutions representative Lloyd Pooker discussed bidding options with the St. James Board of Education last week and gave a schedule of things to come.

Trial is scheduled for St. James man charged with manslaughter

A trial date has been set for the St. James resident charged with first degree involuntary manslaughter after Casey L. (Black) Brady, of St. James, died in one-car wreck in June, 2011. Earl D. Briggs, 21, is scheduled to face a jury on the one-year anniversary of Brady’s death.

Time to bring back two-hour parking

“They’ve got it bass ackwards.” That’s how my mother would have described how the city of Steelville is dealing with continued complaints about business owners and workers parking on Main Street all day. Rather than taking the necessary steps to fix the problem by making the business owners and workers park elsewhere, city officials would rather have downtown shoppers find other places to park. As a downtown business owner, I have to say that is ridiculous!

JV girls win tournament

The Steelville High School junior varsity girls won the championship of the Viburnum JV tournament last week. The Lady Cards defeated Viburnum 44-40 to win the title.
