This year’s Tour of Missouri bicycle race routes will provide many opportunities for area residents to view the race, which will pass through the region on September 9-10. This year’s race kicks off in St. Louis on September 7 and concludes September 13 in Kansas City.     The race will enter the local area on Wednesday, September 9 when the third stage travels from Farmington to Rolla. Racers will travel through southern Crawford County and southeastern Phelps County before finishing in downtown Rolla.
The Farmington to Rolla stage will cover 114.3 miles and will get under way at 11 a.m. According to Tour of Missouri officials, the stage may be the most challenging in the three-year history of the race. With more than 6,000 feet of total climbing on hill after hill, this stage of the Tour is expected to begin to shape the race for the overall champion.
Racers will enter Crawford County on Highway 49 after passing through Viburnum. The route travels north on Highway 49 to Cherryville, where it will turn south on Highway 19 to Route VV. Racers will travel all of Route VV to Route M, where they will turn south toward Cook Station. They will then turn west on Route YY, which will take them into Phelps County.
Route YY will take riders to Highway 68, where they will briefly travel north to Route F and begin heading northwest toward Rolla. The race will leave Route F and take Phelps County Road 3410 north to Route BB, where it will turn west into Rolla for an expected finish between 3:10 and 4:15 p.m.
The Thursday, September 10 start in downtown St. James will get under way at 2 p.m. The race will briefly travel north on Highway 68 before turning right onto Route B and continuing north to Bland. Racers will travel west on Highway 28 to Belle and then continue west on Highway 42 to Vienna.
From Vienna, the race will continue west on Highway 42 to Highway 133, where it will turn north. At Meta, the race will turn right onto Route B and pass through St. Thomas and cross over the Osage River before arriving in Wardsville, where it will turn onto Route M and head back east to Highway 50/63.
At Schubert, the race will turn west on Route J before turning onto Algoa Road for the run into Jefferson City. Racers are expected to arrive in the capital between 5:45 and 7 p.m.
The only repeat stage from 2008, the 109.2 mile stage four race from St. James to Jefferson City begins with gently rolling hills, but it finish is perhaps the most challenging of the entire race. Officials say even the world’s top sprinters will be humbled by the “capitol wall,” a steep, 300-meter climb to the finish line adjacent to the state capitol building.

I wonder if the people who want to keep the road rally out of Steelville are
happy that the TOur of Mo , and the money and tourists that accompany it will be
steering clear of Steelville. Folks from Steelville can come to Cherryville
and watch them make the turn toward Salem instead of Steelville
