VFW to honor fallen veterans Print E-mail
Thursday, 21 May 2009 12:22
The Steelville Cemetery Association held their annual meeting lest Friday evening, May 15. Don Gummersheimer of the VFW Post 345 in Steelville attended, letting everyone know that the Steelville VFW Hall will be putting out flags again this year for our veterans. If anyone has a loved one that was a veteran, please make sure that the grave is able to be recognized as a veteran’s grave; they don’t want to leave anyone out to be acknowledged for their military services.     Memorial Day comes early this year and the cemetery association will have volunteers collecting donations this weekend and on Memorial Day. Donations are now tax deductible for the Steelville Cemetery, so come on up and show your support.
I want to thank all the volunteers that helped on clean up day again this year. I also especially want to thank my girlfriend Laurie for helping me restore neatly 100 old tombstones so far in the old section of the cemetery this spring, some as old as the 1860’s. We have set them up and glued them beck together as best we could. There are still quite a few stones laying on the ground that will eventually be put back up where they belong.
I invite everyone to come up to the cemetery and take a look around, have a picnic, or take some pictures if you wish. I saw a few people taking pictures last Tuesday evening before the cemetery was completely mowed and trimmed after all the rains, and didn’t look its best. Come back up and take some more pictures; they will turn out much better now. The grass is not a foot tall anymore.
I want to thank the Steelville Cemetery Association for giving me the opportunity to serve as the caretaker once again this year. I look forward to serving the cemetery and community for many more years to come. In time, the Steelville Cemetery will be a place the community and all can go and be proud of the way it looks.
One last thing I would like to mention: The Steelville Cemetery is built on a hillside, as most people know. Since some logging has been done a few years ago around the cemetery, there is a lot of wind that now blows through it. Please make sure when you put flowers on your loved ones’ graves this year, that they are secure. There are a few flowers right now that have blown off the tombstones, and I have no idea where they go. Please either mark a name on them or check them frequently to make sure they are still there. The cemetery association is not responsible for any lost flowers.
Sincerely,
John Ransom

Tigers finally fall to Wildcats

When you have a 100-yard rusher, a 200-yard passer and gain a total of 459 yards, all while holding your opponent to 365 total yards, you would expect to win a football game. The St. James Tigers did just that last Friday night in Cuba, but came up on the short end of a 24-12 final. It was the Tigers first ever loss to the Wildcats in 11 years. (See Photo Gallery)

City should be commended for help

I wish to take this opportunity to thank the city council for helping the Tri-County Humane Society Shelter with funding. I personally know how hard it is to keep the no kill shelter operating, since I was on the board there for a long time.
