Recently, Mace Supermarket entered the Chilean Grape Contest—and won. Over 90 other grocery stores entered to win the grape display contest, but Mace’s came out on top in the end.
The contest challenged stores to not only make a creative display, but market their grapes, as well. The winners were based on their display, sales over the past year, and how creative produce workers got when making their display. Many stores came up with themes to compliment their grape stands. Together Mace employees Dana Gutknecht and Brad Mace came up with an old-fashioned theme. It involved Lucille Ball’s famous grape smashing episode from “I Love Lucy.” Other posters showed customers all of the varieties of Chilean grapes and what part of Chile that particular variety comes from. For three weeks, Mace Supermarket promoted the grapes, and their award-winning display could be seen in the produce section of the Cuba grocery store. As part of the promotion, produce workers passed out grapes to customers as they strolled past the display. Several workers even dressed up for the special occasion. The first place prize was a $500 American Express gift card, which was split between Gutknecht and Mace. “I spent my half on a set of tires, while Brad spent his on household items,” joked Gutknecht.

Five young ladies are competing to become Miss St. James during this year’s Grape and Fall Festival Queen Pageant, which will be held at Wednesday, Sept. 8, at St. James Middle School. Festivities will get under way at 8 p.m.
This week the staff at Three Rivers Publishing is proud to bring readers of the Cuba Free Press, Saint James Press and Steelville Star-Crawford Mirror our annual “Salute to Locally Owned Businesses.”
Steelville residents Richard Korte and Colon “Butch” Moore attended the 58th Annual Governor’s Ham Breakfast at the Missouri State Fair in Sedalia on Aug. 19.
When you have a 100-yard rusher, a 200-yard passer and gain a total of 459 yards, all while holding your opponent to 365 total yards, you would expect to win a football game. The St. James Tigers did just that last Friday night in Cuba, but came up on the short end of a 24-12 final. It was the Tigers first ever loss to the Wildcats in 11 years. (See Photo Gallery)
I wish to take this opportunity to thank the city council for helping the Tri-County Humane Society Shelter with funding. I personally know how hard it is to keep the no kill shelter operating, since I was on the board there for a long time.
