The historic building built to host the Wagon Wheel Restaurant in 1954 has a new tenant eager to provide hospitality, good food, and entertainment along the I-44 and Route 66 corridor.
The easy-access wedge of land at the I-44 UU Exit should give the owners, a St. Louis based company with a history in the hospitality industry, a jump-start to success in their new Road House 66 venture. For weeks, the owners and their workers have been hammering, sawing, tearing apart, building, and cleaning. A new identity has arisen from the chaos. The décor for Road House 66 could be described as a modernized roadhouse look. Joe Sonderman, a Route 66 author and collector of vintage Route 66 images, has shared photos of Route 66 that will decorate the walls.
David Carlow, Vice President of Operations for the St. Louis-based company that owns Road House 66, stated, “Road House 66 specializes in the finest grilled steaks unlike any you have ever tasted.” Freshly made pastas, salads, seafood, and homemade breads with daily lunch and dinner specials at affordable prices round out their menu. Chef Robert Wilder comes from the Missouri Bluffs Golf Club and is eager to show what he and his staff can do in the kitchen. The restaurant will offer Friday Night Fish Fries, Bar-B-Que & Blues on Saturdays, and Home-Style Sundays. After dinner, the restaurant has live entertainment starting at 8:30 p.m. each night. Carlow, who is thrilled to be opening in the Cuba area, stated, “We offer this area something quite unique. On the entertainment side, we have national touring headliners from the Funny Bone Comedy Club, blues and rock artists from the St. Louis region, and we can’t leave out our own Karaoke artist Dave Draper.” Every Wednesday night Funny Bone comedians perform. Thursday and Sunday are Karaoke nights, and Friday and Saturday features live music as the hottest bands from all over the St. Louis area rock the house. Besides the live entertainment, High Definition, flat screen TVs deliver satellite sporting events and make the restaurant the place to catch a game and hang out. Every night is ladies night, and the restaurant wants to be known as a classy, yet casual place with great service and delicious food. Future plans include renovating the small building next to the restaurant into a separate bar with its own identity. The outdoor facilities will be utilized, and Road House 66 would like to sponsor events such as car and motorcycle shows from time to time. General Manager Harm Kurz is a restaurant veteran that can’t wait to open the doors of Road House 66 to locals and travelers alike. “You will not recognize the place when you walk in. We gave the place a complete facelift,” he said. The restaurant and nightclub are open Tuesday through Sunday and closed on Monday. The restaurant hours are from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. After the main kitchen closes, bar foods are offered during designated nightclub hours. The nightclub hours begin at 3 p.m. until 10 p.m. on Tuesday, with food served until 9 p.m. The nightclub is open until 1 a.m. Wednesday through Saturday, with food until 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, and until 12:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. They are open Sundays from 11 a.m. until midnight, with food served until 11 p.m. Call 573-885-6398 for details.
