Plans are accelerating for the second annual Route 66 Race to the Rocker on March 27. JOG, inc., a local running club, has teamed with the Route 66 Fanning Outpost General Store (home of the rocker) to sponsor a unique four-mile “straight shot” run to the distinctive 42 foot steel rocking chair that looms over Route 66, four miles west of central Cuba. The race is slated for Saturday, March 27, rain or shine, at 9 a.m. Cuba, designated “Route 66 Mural City,” by the Missouri Legislature for its 12 outdoor murals, is used to the spotlight and looks forward to the influx of runners that the race brings. According to race director Brad Austin, “This is a chance to combine both the running, which our group loves, and the town’s art with a family-friendly event to benefit the Cuba school track. The proceeds of the race will be donated to buy equipment for the new track, built in 2009, for the 2010 season.” JOG, inc. organized in 2008 when a band of runners/walkers formed a group to share exercise. The organization is a chapter of the Road Runners Club of America. Big River Running Company will provide professional timing for the race. According to club secretary Rachelle Austin, “The 2009 race was a huge success. Our goal for 2010 is to have 300 racers.” Race committees are working to make sure the 2010 race is as well executed as last year’s race. Dan Sanazaro, owner of the Route 66 Fanning Outpost General Store, sees the event as a way to support the community and share the fun of the rocker. “This is a way for us to celebrate the rocker and help give back to the community by supporting the track project,” he stated. This year’s race T-shirt will feature the distinctive Route 66 Rocker, and the race’s goal will be what JOG, inc. stresses in their written guidelines when they encourage members “to run, walk, be healthy, and have fun.” Runners and walkers of all ages are welcome to join the event.
