Rain and sleet make for a dangerous combination
Three women were injured in a vehicle pile-up near Cuba on Wednesday. The wreck was a result of the icy road conditions that afternoon. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that Nancy Schager of Cuba lost control of her Pontiac Grand Am at the sharp curve about a half-mile south of Cuba on Highway 19. Schager’s car crossed the centerline of the sleet-covered roadway and struck a Pontiac Vibe driven by Travis Mowers of Rolla. Both cars went off the highway. Amber Davis of Steelville was behind Schager’s car when the initial accident took place, and when she put on her brakes, her Chevy Lumina lost control on the slick ice and also left the roadway. Davis, 21; Schager, 46; and passenger Tiffany Nissen, 20, of Cherryville; were taken to Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan. All of them had reported only minor injuries. There were other cars involved in the accident that left the roadway to avoid striking another vehicle. No one else was hurt in the incident, but the highway was shut down to traffic for about 45 minutes. Cars were rerouted to avoid the accident scene while it was being cleared of vehicles.
