Cuba girl returns home from hospital, but more surgeries ahead

The little girl seriously injured in a recent dog attack is back home and doing better, but she has a long, hard road to full recovery.

A Pit Bull dog mauled Lexi Lynn Middleton, a Cuba Elementary first grader, on Feb. 5, while she was having a snowball fight with some other children in her neighbor’s front yard. When she entered the area where the dog was kept chained, it bit her in the face.

The seven-year-old girl was taken to St. Louis Children’s Hospital, where she stayed for nine days, undergoing two operations. Initially, she was kept on a ventilator and fed with a feeding tube.

While her release from the hospital has allowed her to return home and to some of her normal routines, she still has considerable pain and cannot open her left eye on the side where the bite occurred. Her mother Debra said she would need additional medical care for the foreseeable future, and future reconstructive surgeries are a probability.

It is unclear at this time if the damage to her vision will be permanent. Lexi still has swelling and visible scars from where the flesh of her face was ripped apart, and the dog bite that caused damage to her left jaw will require dental surgery as she gets older.

“We just wanted to give our thanks and gratitude to the community, close friends and surrounding counties. They have come together to do great things for Lexi and our family,” said Debra Middleton, speaking on behalf of the Middleton Family. “We greatly appreciate all of the love, prayers and support you’ve given us. We’re not even able to begin how to put into words how grateful we are for helping us in this tragic time of need. You will all forever be in our hearts and prayers, as well.”

The family continues to transport Lexi back and forth to St. Louis for doctor’s care each week, and they need help with the cost of ongoing medical and travel expenses. A trust fund has been established to assist with the family’s needs in caring for Lexi. To contribute, send your donations to the Lexi Lynn Middleton Trust Fund, c/o Debra J. Middleton, Southern Commercial Bank, Portfolio 10326, St. Louis, MO, 63111.

I am not really sure if they applied for Medicaid, as it is not my business nor
yours if they applied. Also, they are not asking you personally for donations,
the community gets together as a whole and asks for donations when a tragedy
happens to a neighbor. But it is just that, a donation, nothing more. It is
not mandated to give them money. No one is making you give them money. Last I
checked the definition of a donation is "a gift given, typically for
charitable purposes to benefit a cause." If this bothers you so much simply
don't donate. Tragedies happen every day and it is wonderful our communities
can come together and support each other like this and to sit and speak ill
about why or why not they have no health insurance is very sad.

I would want to be there as well. If this family is over income levels for
medicaid, they make more than most. What are they going to do when the health
care reform passes? They will be fined by the government for not having
insurance...then what ask for help with the fine? There are many children who
are eligible for medicaid that are not receiving it due to parents don't know
that they are eligible. The amount that was given is for medicaid at a premium
level. Not free medicaid.

Did they apply? I have a good feeling that the family is larger than 3. Since
I saw an older brother being interviewed on TV. I am just giving information
that there is insurance available. Do you know that the family has been denied.
Maybe the families that are below the above and have no insurance available
should apply for medicaid. They can do it on line through the department of
Social Services web site. I beleive that this family may be eligible for
medicaid and should explore those resorces before asking for the public to
donate

We need to pass healthcare reform now.....Stories such as this make it clear
that the people, the majority ,have a desperate need for health care system
reform.
When a broken arm costs $40,000 to set.
When an illness will ruin your
family financially, there is a huge flaw in our system.
All forms of government
systems are hybrids, no such thing as a system without socialism.
Why do
insurance companies, hospitals, drug companies get rich while average, sick
people get ruined?
Really, ...why??

I am not sure where that information came from and I am not going to argue about
it since I am not sure if it is accurate. But, $4,500 per month for a family of
3 seems a little high if that is the correct amount then there are many families
out there that should qualify. I don't know too many families that make that
kind of money and only have 1 child. The best information I could find came off
the Social Services website and it states that a child whose family does not
have access to health insurance can have a household income not to exceed $2289
per month for a family of three.
Also even if this family were to get
approved for Medicaid, it does not pay for the families traveling expenses, just
the daughters. I don't know about you but if it were my 7 year old I would want
to be there for every surgery and would want my husband there too.

I have follwed the story... a family of 3, would have to make over $4500.00 per
month not to be eligible financially for medicaid at all. There are other
eligibility factors such as citizenship that might make them not eligible. This
family is asking for help from the public so the assumption is that they do not
make that kind of money. It would be interesting to know why medicaid denied
coverage...

eyeswide open, if you were following this story you would know that this family
(as many families) do not qualify for the Missouri Medicaid program and do not
have ANY health insurance. Therefor all medical expenses are to be self paid.

Just wanted to let everyone know that insurance may be active and available to
this little girl. Missouri has a program commonly known as Medicaid. This
child may already be active on the program, as the hospital would have sent a
social worker to assist with application process for those who have no
insurance. This program also provides free transportation to the recipients for
those follow up visits that she will be needing.
