Two seniors were crowned as the 2015 homecoming king and queen: Jacob Beers and Carlee Diaz. The coronation took place as part of homecoming festivities at Steelville High School on Friday, January 23.

    The St. James Chamber of Commerce held its annual awards dinner on Friday, January 23 to recognize the past year’s efforts from local businesses and volunteers. The annual banquet is used as a time to remember the work completed the year before and to honor those who played a crucial part in improving the community.

Bourbon Community Center receives grant

    The Bourbon Area Community Center received a grant of $1,000 from the Bourbon Community Foundation to help with the new lighting project at the center.  Foundation President, Mary Heywood presented the check to Barb Condren at the center last week.

John Britton served his community well

Both Cuba and Steelville mourn the loss of a man devoted to making his community a better place. John Britton, actively involved in a variety of endeavors in both cities for many years, died on Wednesday, January 21, at the age of 86.

The 2014 Farm Bill contains several provisions that enable farmers and landowners to make decisions regarding their involvement in federal farm programs.  Landowners will have the opportunity to reallocate base acres on individual farms as well as update yield information that is used to determine some farm program payments.

    Invites to go fishing are difficult to turn down. However, I found myself doing just that on Martin Luther King Day. A cold still hung on after three weeks. Energy evaded me and it was national holiday. Fishermen would be out in droves.

Art in the Park returning to Steelville

Art in the Park is coming back to Steelville this spring and promises another enjoyable day of creative fun for people of all ages. The annual event, sponsored by the Steelville Arts Council, is scheduled for Saturday, April 25 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Steelville Community Park.
