J&M Displays was awarded the city’s bid for a fireworks display to celebrate the Fourth of July. But the event will actually take place on Saturday, July 5 at Hood Park, as J&M Displays was already contracted to shoot fireworks elsewhere on July 4.
Vegetables and flowers are now available at the Steelville High School Greenhouse. Students from the greenhouse class and FFA are selling the plants to raise funds to support next year’s greenhouse and other FFA activities. The greenhouse is open every day school is in session from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
New aldermen to the St. James City Council were sworn in Monday night. The evening saw Danielle Verkamp and Mag Roberts leaving the council. Following the reformation of the council, discussion was held on bids for utility contractor boring on the north side of town.
A Steelville man is in jail after allegedly attacking another man with a tire iron and beating him severely on Sunday. Brock Edward Woodfin, age 45, stands charged with class A felony assault in the first degree and unclassified felony armed criminal action. He is currently being held on $247,000 cash only bond.
The body of Army Sergeant Timothy Owens returned to Rolla on Friday, April 11. A procession of the Missouri Highway Patrol and nearly 100 Patriot Guard motorcycle riders escorted the hearse from St. Louis to a funeral home in Dixon. Owens, 37, was killed in the recent mass shooting at Fort Hood, Texas, and his funeral was held on Saturday in Rolla.

A cruise in is scheduled for Saturday, April 19 at the Missouri Veteran Home. The event will be held from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the veterans home and will include a Cruisin’ with the Veterans at 2 p.m., where participants can take a resident veteran for a ride through St. James.
