A Steelville family lost their home and pets to fire last week when a blaze consumed the house located on Patrick Street, just off Keysville Road.
The two-alarm fire was battled by firefighters from around the area. The Steelville Fire Protection District was assisted by crews and trucks from Cuba, Bourbon, Sullivan, Leasburg, St. Clair, Rolla Rural, Potosi and Doolittle.
According to SFPD Lt. Joe Smart, fire personnel mounted an initial interior attack, believing there was someone inside the structure, but once confirmation was received that no one was there, the crews withdrew because the fire had spread to the roof. Firefighters continued work to control the flames from the outside.
Smart reported that the fire marshal had been called to investigate, but a cause has yet to be determined.
Steelville teachers organized the gathering of needed supplies for the family, asking that students bring donations to help. Students were encouraged to bring money or items that the family would need, including basics such as toothpaste, soap, shampoo, towels, and washcloths.
