It didn’t take long for the Cuba Wildcat boys to take command in their homecoming matchup against the Bourbon Warhawks. Cuba finished a second consecutive season undefeated in conference play and unbeaten at home. They also finished out their regular season with win number 23 by knocking off Bourbon 85-50 on Friday night.
A strong first quarter start was all the Wildcats needed to put this one away. Using their overpowering speed and relentless defensive pressure, the Cats built an early, insurmountable lead. Cuba was up 29-6 after the first quarter and 48-18 by halftime.
Things didn’t get any easier for Bourbon in the second half, with Cuba winning the third quarter by a spread of 26-16. Cuba cruised through the fourth quarter to an 85-50 final.
Bryer Nash led the Wildcats with 24 total points. Kody Ettinger scored 17 points, Ryan Weaver 13, Ryan Bouse 13, Brendan Wild five, Taylor Thompson five, Nick Lemons five, and Cameron Williams three.
Lemons led the squad with four rebounds, and Thompson led the way with five assists. The team compiled 13 steals, 22 rebounds, and 11 assists.
Both teams’ coaches were playing things close to the vest, as the two squads were scheduled to meet again in the first round of this week’s district tournament being hosted by Cuba.
