Cardinals fall to Bismarck, beat Newburg

   The Steelville varsity baseball boys traveled to Bismarck on March 23 and lost a close one, by the final of 6-5. Steelville had just six hits in the game.

    Preston Griggs led the team in hits going 2-2 and scoring a run. Caleb Parry, Brandon Howdeshell, Adam Volner, and Blake Schneider each contributed one hit.
    Volner started the game on the hill for the Cardinals. He threw six innings, striking out nine, walking five, and was charged with three unearned runs. Lane Becker got the loss, pitching one-third of an inning, allowing three runs, one of which one was earned. Brandon Howdeshell pitched the final third of the last inning, walking two and striking out one.
    The team earned it first victory of the season against Newburg April 2, after dropping their first two games of the season. The Cardinal bats were hot in this one. The boys rattled out 12 hits, scored 11 runs, and won by the final score of 11-8.
    Caleb Earney led the offensive attack for Steelville going 3-3 at the plate, with two doubles, three stolen bases, and two RBI. Griggs went 2-3 with three RBI. Becker had a single, double, and two RBI.
    Becker earned the victory pitching four innings. He allowed two earned runs, struck out three, and walked three.
    The Cardinals will be back in action at 6:30 p.m. today (April 5) in the semifinals of the GVC tournament. They will also play in the final round of the tourney on Saturday at the Community Park.
