The varsity baseball Tigers earned victories over Steelville and Houston last week, but lost to Rolla and Waynesville. It was a busy week with four games in five days and one weather cancellation.
In varsity action, the Tigers lost a seventh-inning lead to Waynesville to lose the game 11-10 on April 29 and lost to Rolla 11-1 on April 30. The Waynesville game started out tied in the first inning 2-2. Waynesville pulled ahead in the second inning by one and the Tigers took the lead in the third inning scoring three bringing the score to 5-3 for St. James.
Waynesville took the lead back in the fifth. The Tigers tied it up and took the lead in the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh, however, St. James led 10-6 until Waynesville scored five runs in the seventh. Zach Dean pitched most of the game with two strikeouts and one walk. Troy Parker had two RBI and Zhack Heuser, Jake Ford, Jake Gleason and Zack Russell all had one RBI. The JV also lost in Waynesville 19-13.
In the Rolla game, the Bulldogs took a 4-0 lead in the first inning. The varsity Tigers scored one in the second on a hit from Parker, bringing Jesse Hays across the plate. Rolla brought home one run in in the fourth, three in the fifth and two in the sixth. Brenn Bartz pitched four innings with three strikeouts and no walks. Gleason pitched two innings with two strikeouts and one walk.
In Steelville on May 1, the varsity Tigers brought home a win 9-5. Nathan Strait and Elye Rogers both had two RBI. Justin Ray, Jesse Hays and Dean all had one RBI.
The Tigers led at the top of the third 4-0. The Cardinals scored two in the third, closing the gap, but the Tigers crossed the plate three times in the fourth extending the lead to 7-2. The Cardinals scored three in the fifth inning, but couldn’t take the lead as the Tigers scored in the sixth and seventh innings. Justin Ray pitched all seven innings with eight strikeouts and no walks.
The ninth grade lost to Union 8-1 on May 1.
The varsity Tigers brought home the win, 7-5, from Houston on May 2. The Tigers didn’t jump out early in this game, but held the lead for three innings then trailed for two as Houston scored three in the fourth. Trailing 3-2, the Tigers felt the pressure and stepped it up in the sixth inning, scoring four to Houston’s one to take the lead. Both teams scored one in the seventh.
Austin Gibson had two RBI. Having one RBI each were, Strait, Ford, Gleason and Hays. Ford pitched four innings with eight strikeouts and four walks. Gleason pitched two innings with two strikeouts and one walk. Dean pitched one inning with one strikeout, one walk and got the save.
In the Four-Rivers Conference, the varsity is now 3-3. They are 8-14 overall. The Tigers will close out the regular season when they host Crocker at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, May 9. The will begin play in the district tournament on Saturday.
