Flying the Spirit of Crawford County

County Clerk Mardy Leathers ran across a photo of the WWII fighter plane titled The Spirit of Crawford County Missouri while doing an unrelated research for his MBA. But he didn’t know the story behind the photo and posted on Facebook. The photo of the plane named after our county and her proud and smiling young crew prompted questions, such as why was the plane named after our county and what were the details? With the use of Internet research; email that can carry questions, answers and photos around the world; and yellowed copies of 1943-44 period local newspapers, we now have the rest of the story.
