The Steelville High School Lady Cardinals played three games in Saturday’s heat at the Houston Softball Tournament, taking on Bakersfield, Cabool and Winona. The team’s only win came against Cabool.
The Lady Cards opened tourney play against Bakersfield and fell 8-4. Although she took the loss, Weber only gave up two earned runs and four hits, while walking four and striking out one.
The score was tied 1-1 after the first inning and Bakersfield went up 2-1 in the second. It was 5-3 Bakersfield at the end of the third inning. Steelville then scored one in the fifth and gave up three.
Livesay had and double and one run scored. Kelsie Booker scored one run. Mady Roper had one hit, one run and one RBI. Weber had a pair of hits, including a triple, one run and one RBI. Megan Hammonds had one RBI and Jessica Helms had one hit.
Weber was back in the circle against Cabool in the second game and earned a win for the Lady Cards. He pitched all four innings and gave up three earned runs, walked two, allowed three hits and struck out seven in the 9-5 win.
Steelville trailed Cabool 3-0 after the first inning, but chipped away to make it a 5-2 game headed into the fourth. That’s when Steelville broke the game open with six runs and then held Cabool scoreless to get the victory.
Booker led Steelville at the plate with a pair of hits, one a double, two runs and an RBI. Weber had a home run for Steelville, drive in two runs and scored twice. Livesay had one run, Roper one hit and one run, Hammonds one hit, Lela Chamber one hit, one run and one RBI, Melanie Perkins one run and Jessica Medlock one run.
The Lady Cardinals fell to Winona by the same 9-5 score in the final game of the tourney. This time Weber pitched all five innings and allowed five earned runs. She gave up eight hits, walked four and struck out four.
Steelville led this game 1-0 early, but gave up four runs in the third and four more in the fourth to fall behind 8-1. Steelville scored four times in the fifth inning and also gave up a run to account for the 9-5 loss.
The Lady Cardinals had just two hits is the game. Chambers had a single and one run scored and Hammonds had a double. Livesay scored twice and Booker and Roper each scored once.
After hosting Cuba today at 4:30 p.m., the Lady Cardinals will be back in action Monday when they host Owensville at 4:30 p.m. They will also host Laquey at 5 p.m. next Wednesday.
