City schedules transportation tax hearing

    Steelville residents will have the opportunity to learn about the proposed transportation tax for November’s ballot at a public hearing scheduled for Monday, October 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the City Hall Council Room.

    n August, aldermen agreed to put the tax proposal on the ballot in November, asking the public to approve a half-cent tax to help fund necessary improvements to city streets. The proposed tax includes a sunset clause after five years.
    City Comptroller Jennifer Basham has promoted this way to increase revenue to fund the street department, estimating that the new tax could bring in about $120,000 annually to help the municipality with street work. This proposal will be the only item to be voted on at this particular election.
