Varsity girls struggle against FRC teams

The Cuba Lady Wildcats struggled to find a hot hand offensively in a pair of losses at home against some tough Four Rivers Conference competition last week. The CHS varsity girls lost by double-digit scores to both Owensville and Pacific.

In the Owensville game on Jan. 14, the Lady Cats were able to win only one out of three quarters: the fourth. The Dutchgirls took the first period 18-11 and led 30-17 at halftime.

Owensville scored 16 points in the third quarter, while holding Cuba to just seven. In the fourth period, the Lady Cats outpaced Owensville 13-10 but were in too big a hole to come back. They lost the game 56-37.

Cuba shot just 37 percent from the field, including only 3 of 12 shooting from outside the three-point line. They also shot poorly at the free throw line, making just 12 of 21 for 57 percent.

The loss that night spoiled a fine performance by Hannah Mitchell, who had 17 points on 5 of 12 shooting. Aurora Pfeiffer scored seven, Shelby Whitaker six, Taylor Williams six, and McKenzie DeRennaux one. Williams led the team in rebounds with five.

The Cuba girls played Pacific at home on Jan. 16 and suffered a similar outcome. This time, the Lady Cats struggled to find their shot and managed only 38 percent shooting from the field and 33 points for the game.

The Indians took it to the Wildcats right from the opening tip. Pacific led 12-9 after the first period ended and had a 28-16 lead at the break. The Indians were up 37-24 after three quarters and finished the game ahead 54-33.

Whitaker led the offense with 10 points. Williams scored seven, Mitchell six, Pfeiffer four, DeRennaux three, and Alexis Price three. Williams had four steals in the game, and team combined for 20 rebounds and 12 turnovers.
