Where the wild quail fly

There are a numbers of younger hunters who have never walked Ozark fields behind a pair of good bird dogs, and witnessed the explosion of a rising covey of bobwhite quail. Thankfully, I was a boy during the best years of it, the late 1950s and early ‘60s. My Dad’s best friend owned some of the finest English setters and pointers I have ever hunted behind. In the ‘70s and early ‘80s I owned my own bird dogs, but you could see the quail declining, outright disappearing in places where there had once been an abundance of birds.
