Rolla wins tournament

• Tigers fall to Blair Oaks in third-place game
The St. James Tigers finished fourth in their annual boys basketball tournament, which concluded on Saturday. The Tigers fell to Blair Oaks in the third-place game before Rolla defeated Sullivan for the championship.

The championship game between Sullivan and Rolla went into overtime before the Bulldogs took the title 50-48. Caleb Copeland, of Rolla, was named the tournament’s most valuable player. Logan Courtois was the only Tiger included in the all-tournney team.
In the week long tournament, St. James won their first game on January 20 against the Licking Wildcats 59-45. The Tigers were led by Logan Courtois with 16 points and Addison Conway with 14. Eleven of the 15 Tigers’ points in the fourth quarter were from free throws. Cody Birkner scored nine, Jamal Sconiers and Levi Witt six each, Elye Rogers four, Zach Dean two, Jake Money and Ryan Courtois one.
The Tigers next took on Sullivan last Friday night. Sullivan had defeated Union in their first game of the tournament. The Tigers lost to Sullivan 53-41.
The Eagles and Tigers were tied going into second quarter at 12. The game stayed close with St. James in the lead at half 26-22, but the Tigers lost their lead and fell behind in the third 38-35.
The fourth quarter really hurt with the Tigers as they scored only six.  Witt led St. James with 15 points, followed by Money eight, Logan Courtois six, Addison Conway five, Rogers four, and Nathan Strait three.
In the third-place game Saturday against Blair Oaks, the Tigers struggled with rebounding and passing. The Falcons were aggressive in their rebounding, frustrating the Tigers’ defense.
St. James trailed from the first quarter 23-8 and still trailed by 25 at half.  The trend carried on in the second half with Blair Oaks leading going into the fourth 54-30, and closing out the game 72-50.
Conway led the team with 14 points, scoring 13 in the second half while passing the 500-point mark for his varsity career. Birkner scored 11, Sconiers scored nine, L. Courtois six, Rogers and Witt four each, and Money two.
The varsity boys are playing in the Hermann tournament this week while the JV boys are playing in the Pacific tournament. The Tigers will be playing in Steelville at 6 p.m. Monday night.
