The Sixth Annual “Race to the Rocker” will be held on March 22 in Cuba. The four-mile race from historic uptown Cuba to the site of the World’s Largest Rocking Chair in Fanning is sponsored by JOG, Inc. (Joggers of God, In Cuba). Proceeds from the event go to support local charities.
But it’s not only the running and the gifts to charities that make this a special event in Crawford County. As the race has continued to grow, organizers have heard stories about how deeply it has affected some of the individual participants. So, this year, they sent out a call for personal accounts of what the “Race to the Rocker” has meant to them. These inspirational stories of personal triumph, dogged determination, and life-changing decisions will be shared in the next several weeks as the race approaches. These stories are written by the participants, so readers can hear, in their own words, the impact of this event on their lives.
Jackie West: “Building Better Health and More Business”
I just want to share what Race to the Rocker has meant to me. In the beginning, we just watched the race from out in front of the salon (West owns 3rd Generation Salon) and every year, I'd think I wanted to do it, but didn't think I was up to it. Then the year finally came! I started walking in January to get myself ready for the race. It felt so good to be doing something so healthy! That was three years ago!
It has been fun building a team, knowing we’re helping our community, and race day was GREAT! We had beautiful weather, 55 teammates, and we won the biggest team award! That gave us a lot to talk about in the salon! Last year, we also had the largest team again! It's fun in the salon to build the team and makes for great conversation!
Now that we sell ACE (Appetite Control and Energy supplements), it brings it all together and gets you fired up! This winter has been so cold it's been hard to get folks motivated but we will! I think I'm going to raise the bar a bit in the salon this year with my girls, give them a challenge! Let's see who gets the most teammates, then I'll offer some rewards! It's all for fun and for the better of our community. I've made new friends, and established more business--it's win-win for everyone! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS!
It has also inspired me to do other races! I have now done two others, and I'm looking to do four more this year!
Jane Reed: “A Unique, Empowering Community Event”
I have been a participant in the Race to the Rocker every year, and it has been so satisfying to watch it grow and become such an important part of the community, whether people are volunteering, running, or walking. It brings us together as a community. It has brought many people to our community for the first time, and it brings many back each year. It both helps our economy and lifts our spirits. It has raised thousands of dollars for kids’ fitness. And, I think running on historic Route 66 to the World’s Largest Rocking Chair adds a uniqueness to the race that makes it a stand-out event.
There are many stories of personal triumph behind each race, and the race has changed lives. And I am proud to say that the last person in the race is celebrated and applauded as well as the winners of the race. Whatever the weather, whatever a person’s time and placement, we are all winners at the Route 66 Race to the Rocker.
