Cardinals claim share of the GVC title after wins over Bourbon and Belle-PHOTO GALLERY

    The Steelville High School varsity boys closed out the regular season last week with a pair of Gasconade Valley Conference wins. That, coupled with a loss by Cuba to Vienna, got the Cardinals a share of this year’s conference title.


    The varsity Cardinals had what was undoubtedly their best game of the year at home against Bourbon on February 18. The Cards hit a season high 14 three pointers and blew out the Warhawks 87-40.
    Steelville led all the way against Bourbon after jumping out to a 16-10 lead in the opening quarter. In the second quarter, the Cardinals outscored the Warhawks 24-8 to take a 40-18 lead at the half. It was more of the same in the third and fourth quarters as the Cardinals outscored Bourbon 21-12 and 26-10 respectively to win the game by 47 points.
    Shawn Ryerson led Steelville with 25 points. He made five three-point shots and also had 10 rebounds and nine assists, just missing a triple-double.
    Ethan Ruch scored 16, Adam Volner 15, Dylan Warden 13 (all in the fourth quarter), Devin Diaz nine, Drew Kennedy seven and Caleb Callahan two. Diaz had four steals, five rebounds and four assists.
    Steelville also won the JV game, 44-35. The Cards led 10-8 after the first quarter, but trailed 20-17 at the half. Steelville took command in the third, going up 34-26, before winning by nine. Stats were unavailable.
    The Cardinals closed out the regular season at home against Belle on February 21 and swept the Tigers. The varsity won 85-70 and the JV won 48-35.
    The varsity fell behind Belle 19-18 in the first quarter, but then outscored the Tigers 20-8 in the second to take a 38-27 halftime lead. Steelville posted 29 in the third quarter to lead 67-50 headed into the fourth quarter. The Cards won the game by 15 points.
    Ryerson had another outstanding game, scoring 25 points again. He also pulled down 16 rebounds and had seven assists.
    Preston Griggs scored 20, Ruch 19, Volner eight, Diaz five, Drew Whittaker four, and Kennedy and Callahan two each. Diaz had six assists and three steals and Ruch had seven rebounds.
    In the JV game, Steelville jumped out to a 14-9 lead in the opening quarter and led 26-16 at the half. The Cards were up 40-30 headed into the fourth before winning by 13.
    Whittaker led the JV with 22 points, while Brendan Bass scored 10. Colton Mason added eight and Josh Hayes, Nick Hatcher, Nic Lunsford and Canaan Greer each had two. The JV finished the year on a five-game winning streak to give them a record of 8-9.
    The varsity boys are playing in the Class 3, District 9 tournament at School of the Osage this week.
