Local youth meets state officials at 4-H Legislative Academy

Youth representing the Missouri 4-H program gathered at the State Capitol in Jefferson City on February 17-19 to share 4-H stories and experiences with legislators, commodity groups, and state agency leaders.  The tenth annual 4-H Legislative Academy brought youth delegates from all over Missouri to “learn by doing” at the heart of state government.

David Bippes, the 16-year-old son of Maria and Greg Bippes of Rolla, represented the Missouri 4-H youth program during the Academy.
While in Jefferson City, David was hosted in the State Capitol by Sen. Brian Munzlinger.  The group conversed with over 60 legislators, sponsors, and special guests at a formal dinner, sponsored by Missouri Agribusiness Association and MO-AG’s Jim Russell Foundation.  Marty Oetting, University of Missouri government relations director, oriented the group to the Missouri General Assembly, and delegates were led on an evening tour of the Capitol by Rep. Mike Kelley.
During MU Legislative Day, Feb. 18, David met with Missouri Supreme Court Justice Mary Rhodes Russell in the morning and spent the afternoon shadowing state representatives.
David discussed trends and current events with agricultural leaders from the Missouri Soybean Association, Missouri Beef Industry Council, Missouri Cattleman’s Association, Missouri Corn Growers Association, Missouri Pork Producers Association, and Missouri Farm Bureau.
David Bippes is a member of the Soaring Eagles 4-H Club in Phelps County. He would recommend the 4-H Legislative Academy to other youth, and said  “This experience was a once in a lifetime opportunity.”
Missouri 4-H is a community of over 300,000 youth ages 5-18 from rural farming communities, suburban schoolyards, and urban neighborhoods.  4-H youth are learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills, guided by over 10,000 caring adult volunteers statewide.  University of Missouri Extension 4-H is the youth development program of the nation’s Cooperative Extension system.
