Celebrated St. Louis folk artist will be featured guest
Woodystock 2014 will close out its month-long celebration of the legendary American musician and folk troubadour Woody Guthrie this weekend at Gallery Zeke in Steelville. Woodystock has recognized both Guthrie and his musical legacy with Saturday night folk music events at the gallery throughout the month of April.
This Saturday night (April 26), St. Louis singer-songwriter Cassie Morgan will perform a set of her folk song material at Gallery Zeke, starting at 7:30 p.m.
Morgan was named one of the 100 Greatest Musicians in St. Louis History by St. Louis Magazine in 2012 and was recognized by the Riverfront Times in 2009 as the Best Folk Artist, Best Female Singer-Songwriter, and Best Female Vocalist.
“If folk music is to remain vital, evolving and yet faithful to a timeless tradition,” wrote a scribe for the Riverfront Times, “then it needs more artists like Cassie Morgan.”
She often performs as a duo (Cassie Morgan and the Lonely Pine, which won the Best Folk Band award by the Riverfront Times in 2011), but will be performing a solo set within the intimate confines of Gallery Zeke this weekend. This is a great opportunity to hear Morgan perform live, something she has never done before in this part of the state.
Saturday night will also be Hootenanny Night at the art gallery. After Morgan performs her set, the stage will be opened up to local musicians who want to sing their favorite Woody Guthrie or other folk-related song. Acoustic instruments only, please. Bring a guitar, fiddle, banjo, or mandolin to the gallery, and lead the audience in a folk revival sing-along!
Doors at Gallery Zeke will open Saturday night at 7 p.m. The music starts at 7:30 p.m. There is no admission fee, but donations for the gallery are gladly accepted to help pay for production costs. All ages show.
Woodystock is sponsored by the Steelville Arts Council, a nonprofit, 501c3 organization dedicated to supporting the arts and artists of this region. It is hoped that the Woodystock folk celebration can continue to be an annual event in Steelville.
