Drug take-back event scheduled for Saturday

    A drug take-back program will be held in the St. James Police Department parking lot on Saturday. The St. James Police Department and Kiwanis Club are once again teaming up to properly dispose of unwanted or outdated prescription drugs. Held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., Kiwanis members and police officers will offer drive-through service for all participants.

    In an effort to limit pill abuse and proper disposal of prescription medication, the police and Kiwanis members have pushed to take unused or expired medications for safe disposal. All collected medications will be given to the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) for disposal. Kiwanis members hope the effort will be a reminder of the dangers of pill abuse and educate citizens on proper disposal of medications.
    The initiative addresses public safety and health issues while providing a safe means of pill disposal. Flushing medications or throwing them in the trash pose potential safety and health hazards. Hundreds of teens die every year from drug abuse. Limiting access and ridding houses of unused prescription and over the counter drugs goes a long way in keeping kids safe.
    All expired or unused prescription drugs will be accepted during the take-back program and can be dropped off at the police station for collection. The service is free to all who drop off medicine and will be a great way to properly rid homes of drugs.
