Boy Scout Troop 429 of Bourbon recently hosted the 2014 Spring Camporee April 25-27 for the Osage District of the Greater St. Louis Area Council. The Osage district includes Franklin and Crawford counties with over 40 Boy Scout troops and Cub Scout packs. This year’s theme was “OLD SCHOOL SCOUTING”.
The camporee was held at Blue Springs Ranch located on the Meramec River, just south of Bourbon, off Highway N. Scouts arrived Friday night at the ranch and started off the evening with a opening campfire and introduction ceremony. Over 370 youth and adults attended the weekend event.
Saturday morning began with an introduction of a new program called “Brownsea Island Patrol” taken from the founding scout camp held in 1907 on Brownsea Island in England by Bayden Powell, the founder of scouting.
This program challenged the older Boy Scouts from each troop with morning program events including orienteering, canoeing, and kayaking. The Bourbon Fire and Rescue department presented an afternoon program on rescue lines and safety procedures from a 30-foot tower, lowering the scouts using a safety harness.
All other Boy Scouts and Webelo Cub Scouts participated in eight different events, including a zip line course put on by the staff at Blue Springs Ranch, pioneering, fire starting, archery, tomahawk throwing and an obstacle course. A search and rescue station was conducted by the North Crawford County Ambulance District.
All the events were planned and conducted by the scouts of Troop and Pack 429. The scouts competed in patrols and were timed or measured for accuracy at each event.
An award ceremony was held at the Saturday evening campfire along the shoreline of the Meramec River.
