The Second Annual Plein Air Painting Festival, sponsored by the Steelville Arts Council, will take place June 7 through June 14. The French expression “en plein air” means “in the open air” and is used particularly to describe the act of painting outdoors. Throughout next week, artists will be found throughout the Steelville area, painting local scenes.
The arts council invites plein air painting artists, enthusiasts, and patrons to come out for the festival and to enjoy the event surrounded by the beauty of the Ozark hills, valleys, and streams. The festival will include several special location painting days, opportunities to purchase daily paintings, and a Gala Dinner and Auction of the 15 prize-winning paintings from the week on Thursday, June 12.
Beginning on Sunday, June 8, interested people can view completed plein air paintings each day at the Steelville Community Building from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. These paintings will also be available for purchase. On Saturday, June 14, the community building will again be open for an artist’s sale, but from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. On the 14th, artists will have available both plein air paintings, along with studio work. Credit cards will be welcome for purchases any day.
The dinner and auction of the prize-winning paintings from the week will be held at Meramec Adventure Learning Ranch on June 12 at 6 p.m. The menu includes prime rib with au jus and horseradish sauce and stuffed chicken breast, twice baked potatoes, roasted vegetables, house salad, rolls with butter, and Irish chocolate cake or New York cheesecake. Complimentary wine and beverages are also included. Tickets are $40, available at First Community National Bank, Peoples Bank, Yadkin Creek Mercantile, and online at steelvilleartscouncil.org.
