Volner and Carey named top SHS senior athletes

    Steelville High School presented its 2013-14 athletic and activities awards last month. Students were recognized for their participation in cross country, softball, volleyball, basketball, cheerleading, poms, baseball and track.

    Kourtney Carey and Adam Volner were honored as this year’s outstanding senior athletes. This year’s Missouri State High School Activities Association sportsmanship awards went to Erin Gaddis and Devin Diaz.
    Earning varsity letters in girls’ cross country wee Alexis Diaz, Sierra Zeiss, Kelsie Booker, Haley Sherman, Carley Huber, Madison McClain and Sarah Usher. The Lady Cardinals were the Gasconade Valley Conference (GVC) champions and Usher, Sherman and McClain were all-conference. Usher was also all-district and all-state. Special awards were: Usher, queen of the road and most valuable runner; Diaz, most improved; and Booker, head hunter.
    Boys’ varsity cross country letters went to Devin Diaz, Dylan Warden, Kaimen Keeven, Nick Marshall, Nick Hatcher, Eric Horton and Devin Woodall. JV certificates went to Devin Warden, Jacob Ransom, Bobby Jerrick and Nick Esparza. Marshall was all-conference and all-district. Special awards went to: Marshall, king of the road and most valuable runner; Keeven, most improved; and Diaz, head hunter.
    Softball varsity letters went to Kelsie Booker, Megan Hammonds, Whitney Lefler, Melanie Perkins, Madyson Roper, Sierra Worthington, Lela Chambers, Jessica Helms, Mykenzie Livesay, Kaytlin Rivera, Reese Weber and Cayman Cottrell, while JV certificates went to Morgan Brown, Sierra Martin, Hannah Hutchings and Jessica Medlock. Hammonds, Livesay and Booker were each all-conference and all-district. Special awards went to: Livesay, best defense; Booker, best offense; Weber, big bat; Worthington, rookie of the year; Roper, most fearless; and Hammonds, most coachable.
    Volleyball varsity letters went to Sierra Zeiss, Emily Whittaker, Reese Weber, Lela Chambers, Megan Hammonds, Erin Gaddis, Kourtney Carey, Mykenzie Livesay and Rachel Stice. JV certificates went to McKayla Limpert, Jessica Medlock, Mackenzie Carey, Paige Cottrell, Lauren Billingsley and Alexis Diaz. The Lady Cardinals were the GVC champions and Whittaker, K. Carey and Zeiss were all-conference and all-district. Whittaker was also all-region. Special awards went to: Whittaker, MVP and best offense; K. Carey, best defense; Zeiss, coaches award; and Gaddis and Livesay, most improved.
    Girls’ basketball varsity letters went to Hallie Boulch, Mykenzie Livesay, Mackenzie Carey, Megan Hammonds, Haley Sherman, Kourtney Carey, Sierra Zeiss, Kaytlin Rivera, Madyson Roper, Jessica Helms, Emily Whittaker and Alexis Diaz. JV certificates went to Sierra Worthington, Cayman Cottrell and Sierra Martin. K. Carey and Whittaker were all conference and K. Carey was all-district. The Lady Cardinals were the GVC tournament champions. Special awards went to: Cottrell, most improved; Livesay, most assists; K. Carey, top rebounder; Whittaker, defensive stopper, Roper, hustle; and K. Carey, Helms and Boulch, senior awards.
    Varsity boys’ basketball letters went to Josh Hayes, Colton Mason, Dylan Warden, Devin Diaz, Adam Volner, Canaan Greer, Drew Kennedy, Shawn Ryerson, Ethan Ruch, Nick Hatcher, Drew Whittaker, Preston Griggs, Caleb Callahan and Brendan Bass. JV certificates went to Jake Sutton, Devin Warden and Nic Lundsford. The Cardinals were the GVC co-champions and finished second in the district tournament. Ruch and Ryerson were each named all-conference and all-district. Special awards went to: Ryerson, best offense; Ruch, best defense; Diaz, most improved; and Volner, coaches award.
    Varsity cheerleading letters went to Kelsea Givens, Samantha Newland, Elizabeth Scheider, Paige Yoemans, Alyssa Hellweg, Brittany Ransom and Alexus Schulter. Varsity poms letters went to Mariah Cape, Paige Cottrell, Kaitlyn Mahurin, Madyson Roper, Krista Watson, Sierra Zeiss, Cayman Cottrell, Erin Gaddis, Madison McClain, Gabby Verble and Sierra Worthington.
    Varsity baseball letters went to Adam Volner, Caleb Parry, Jacob Beers, Preston Griggs, Colton Mason, Brandon Howdeshell, Blake Schneider, Canaan Greer, Drew Kennedy, Lane Becker, Caleb Earney, Jacob Ransom and Nathan Biggs. JV certificates went to Tommy Swyers, Tristen Woods, John Booker, Blake Edgar, Austin Sandberg, Toby DeClue, Kyle Curtis and Jake Sutton. Special awards went to: Volner, MVP, best batting average and best pitcher; Parry, gold glove; and Kennedy, most steals and most hit by pitch.

JV certificates went to Megan Brown and Randi Lewis. Earning all-conference honors were Usher in the 800, 1600 and 3200, Booker in the 200, Chambers in the discus and Zeiss in the high jump. Creech, while Devin Woodall received a JV certificate. Special awards went to: Marshall, MVP and best runner; Hatcher, field events leader; D. Hayes, most improved; and Diaz, coaches award.
