The new art exhibition “For the Love of Birds” at Gallery Zeke will feature the work of two Missouri artists: David Plank and Jim Barksdale.
David Plank, of Salem, MO, grew up in the Missouri Ozarks and began to draw and paint birds from a very early age. In his lifetime, he has created more than 1,400 paintings of birds and has several thousand life study drawings of birds in their natural habitat. His creative process comes from a personal approach in which he composes and paints the birds and their natural habitat in a way that best describes how he feels about that particular species of bird.
Jim Barksdale is a self-taught wood carver who lives and works in Steelville, MO. His bird carvings focus mainly on shore birds, but he has recently begun carving song birds as well, in order to add more color and variety to his work. His carvings have been featured and sold at the Best of Missouri Market at the Missouri Botanical Gardens in St. Louis, at the Old Ironworks show at Maramec Springs Park, and at galleries in California and Maine.
The gallery exhibition “For the Love of Birds” will run from July 12 through July 27. The opening reception will be held Saturday, July 12 from 1 to 5 p.m. and will feature a gallery talk at 2 p.m. about the birds of Steelville by Mike Doyen, President of the Ozark Rivers Audubon Chapter and Nature Center, and a carving demonstration by Jim Barksdale at 3 p.m. Mr. Barksdale will also be demonstrating on July 19 and 26 at noon.
