Great weather makes for great Freedom Fest (PHOTO GALLERY)

Another year of the Steelville Freedom Festival is in the books and, thanks to cool weather and great entertainment, it was another successful story. The Steelville Community Park was packed with people of all ages coming together to celebrate another year of freedom and independence.

The day began with the 5K Fun Run/Walk. Despite the beautiful, cool weather, numbers were down from last year, but the fun was still in abundance. Winners in the 12 & under category were Delane Nolie, first place, Tanner Diaz, second place, Conner Diaz, third place; men 13+ category, Dale Young II, first place, Garrett Becker, second place, Jered Nolie, third place; women 13+ category, Sarah Usher, first place, Teresa Hickey, second place, Christy Nolie, third place; fastest finish youth (13-19), Garrett Becker, fastest finish (40s-50s), Dale Young II, fastest finish (60 plus), Ed Hiss.
River Valley Rod and Custom opened their car show and vendors offering a variety of crafts and trinkets, as well as excellent food, lined the park. Children enjoyed face painting and a number of games before the musical entertainment kicked off.
Native Runaways opened the musical line up with a variety of country and bluegrass music. The Laxton Agency hosted the annual Box Turtle Race for dozens of children, some of whom took home some hefty cash prizes for having the “best dressed” and fastest turtles.
Alderwood took the stage and entertain the crowed with their version of some of the most popular songs throughout the decades.
The local American Legion, as well as local Boy Scouts, presented the colors of the American Flag, and Harvest Festival Queen Kelsie Booker led all in attendance in the Pledge of Allegiance. Country music recording artist Shawna Russell sang the National Anthem, and a reading of the Nation’s founding documents were shared before Russell took the stage.
The celebration ended with the Fantastic Fireworks presentation by A.M. Pyrotechnics.
