New construction will be taxed differently under plan approved by commissioners

    The Phelps County Commission has approved a new occupancy law that will change how residential properties are assessed for taxes. Starting next year, properties within the county will be assessed based on when they become occupied, instead of simply their value at the beginning of the year. Commissioners approved the law last week, which will take effect on January 1, 2015.

‘Claire on Campus’ tour brings senator to S&T for discussion on combating sexual violence

    As part of her “Claire on Campus” tour across the state, U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill visited Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla Monday to talk directly with students, educators, and law enforcement from across the region on ways to combat sexual violence on campus—and get feedback on her bipartisan legislation to protect and empower students, and strengthen accountability and transparency for institutions.

Benefit golf tournament is planned

    A four-person or team scramble golf tournament is scheduled for Saturday, October 11 to benefit the Team Anita—Pay it Forward fund. Open to the first 36 teams, registration will continue until October 4. The event will be held at the Piney Valley Golf Course at Fort Leonard Wood.

Treasurer reports tax revenues are up

    During the week of September 25, Phelps County Commissioners:
    • Awarded a bid on a courthouse access control project to Central Security Alarms, LLC in the amount $26,500 as the low bidder with a three-year warranty and the ability to expand the system in the future.
