City projects increase engineering fees

    Engineering expenses for the city of Steelville are currently at $58,491 for the calendar year, an amount that is nearly $40,000 more than last year’s total annual cost of $19,258. Aldermen approved over $11,000 in bills at the last city council meeting held on June 2, bringing the total since January to nearly $60,000.

Plein Air event was best ever, organizers say - PHOTO GALLERY

    Dozens gathered for the Second Annual Plein Air Gala and Auction last Thursday evening at the Meramec Adventure Learning Ranch with high hopes of selling their paintings to the highest bidder, or bringing home a masterpiece of their own. According to Jack Bowles, this year’s event was the best yet.

Sweet new business opens in Steelville

    Steelville has a new store open for business, and it’s filled with all of the sweetest treats you’ve loved since you were a kid. Brandon and Ashley Thomlinson have opened The Sweet Tooth Shop, located at 106 South First Street in the building formerly known as Helen’s Beauty Shop.

Council still discussing water and sewer rate increases

    No decision was made on whether to increase water and sewer rates in Steelville at the last council meeting, but one should be made at the next one to be held on Monday, June 16 when the budget for the next fiscal year has to be approved.

Local veteran recalls WWII service

    Steelville area resident Ellis Evans served his country as an infantry machine gunner with the 11th Armored Division of the United States Army in World War II. And he agrees with the famous quote, “War is hell.” While Evans consented to the interview about his time in the armed forces, he answered many of the questions posed with the simple, yet revealing response, “You don’t want to know.”
