Speech students compete at state

    Three John F. Hodge High School Speech and Debate students attended district competitions and qualified for state. They recently attended the state competition, bringing home some great results. Caleb Jones, Victoria Stroup, and Austin Naber competed at the University of Missouri in Columbia against schools much larger than St. James.

Electric rate increase approved

    The St. James City Council approved a three percent rate increase for electricity during Monday night’s regular May meeting. Aldermen have been discussing the need for a rate increase in recent months to keep up with the debt service for the Phelps substation and they passed an ordinance to reflect the cost.

Reunion planning meeting set

    St. James alumni are encouraged to attend an informational and organizational meeting on Wednesday, May 21 at the Municipal Building in St. James. Beginning at 4:30 p.m., the meeting is being held in preparation All School Reunion on Saturday, July 5.

Library tax put on August ballot

    A new library tax will be put on the August ballot for operating costs of the James Memorial Public Library. After looking at ways to fund the new city-operated facility, the library board determined that a tax would be necessary to keep the facility maintained. The library has been selling library cards to generate revenue, but that revenue will not be enough to keep the facility open.

Former alderman dies

    Former St. James City Alderman Joe Alexander died suddenly on May 11. Alexander had been a longtime supporter of the city and the Veterans Home throughout his years. He was 77.
