The 2014 Steelville High School softball season officially gets under way Saturday with the Lady Cardinals in action at the New Haven Softball Classic. This year’s team has a much different look that the 2013 squad with a new coaching staff and an influx of freshmen.
With a lot of varsity experience returning from a season in which they were the Gasconade Valley Conference champions, there are big expectations for the Steelville High School volleyball team this fall. The squad has an all-new coaching staff, but also boasts a solid group of juniors and seniors who will anchor the varsity team.
The varsity St. James Tigers football team will officially kick off its 2014 season Friday night when they play in Cuba. The squad, which has a lot of experienced players on the defensive side of the ball, got its first taste of live action last week during a scrimmage in Sullivan.
Coach Brad Purvis is hoping to build on last year’s breakout season when the Lady Tigers softball team had a 15-9 overall record and went 4-3 in the Four-Rivers Conference. The St. James girls will open their 2014 season Friday when they host Rolla at 4:30 p.m. before heading to the New Haven Softball Classic on Saturday.
The 2014 St. James High School volleyball season will officially get under way on Monday, when the Lady Tigers host Steelville to open the season. The St. James girls will not open Four-Rivers Conference play until September 16.
The St. James Tigers will be participating in a football jamboree at Sullivan High School Friday night. The scrimmage will feature the St. James and Salem Tigers, the Sullivan Eagles and the Pacific Indians.
The St. James Tigers boys’ soccer team is heading into it’s second and it is shaping up to be at least as exciting as the first as the Tigers will be playing their home varsity games on the new turf field.
In last week’s sweltering heat, the St. James Orange Crush summer high school softball team dropped two games against Salem. In what turned out to be the last games of the summer season, the varsity lost 5-2 and JV fell 10-1.
St. James Tigers wrestlers took second and third places in the Show-Me State Games recently. Five Tigers and Coach Marty Hauck traveled to Columbia and competed at the Hearnes Center on Saturday, July 19.
