City transportation tax approved
Steelville will have a new half-cent sales tax, after voters approved the proposal to add it to the current tax at the election held on Tuesday, November 5. However, only 60 out of 908 registered voters voiced their opinion in the matter, so a mere seven percent of decision-makers determined the outcome. The measure was passed by a vote of 37 to 23.
Sports Club seeking donations of toys, money
The St. James Sports Club is in need of toys for the annual Christmas toy program. Members will be delivering approximately 1,600 new toys to children in the community and donations are desperately needed to meet the demand.
Filing for city council, school board will open December 17
Filing for positions on the St. James City Council, Board of Education,and Fire Protection Board will open this month. Several seats are up for election and filing will be held from December 17 at 8 a.m. until January 21 at 5 p.m.
This Saturday marks the return of the annual Christmas Parade to downtown St. James. The parade will begin at 5 p.m. starting at the Missouri Veterans Home and traveling to the John F. Hodge High School. Bands, floats, and Santa will be participating in a “Christmas Characters” theme.
City utilities issues warning about scam
St. James Municipal Utilities has been informed about a utility scam by one of its customers and is urging everyone not to give out their personal information to anyone over the phone. A call claiming to be from a utility worker warning customers of a cutoff should they not pay over the phone is spreading throughout the area and utility workers want customers to be prepared in the event they are targeted by this phone scam.
