Harvest Festival queen candidates sought

    Local young women interested in becoming a Harvest Festival Queen candidate for this year may enter now. The annual pageant is scheduled for Thursday, September 4, at the Meramec Music Theatre in Steelville with the theme “50 Magical Years.”


School offers to manage part of Community Park

    Steelville Schools Superintendent Mike Whittaker approached the city council at their last meeting to discuss a potential park agreement that could have the school district essentially managing the inner circle of the Community Park. The city of Steelville had sent the school district a letter stating that a contract between the two entities needed to be in place for the district to begin using the park for fall sports in August. As a result, the school district came up with a proposal to manage the area inside the circular roadway at the park.

City trying to market old San Val bulding

    The city of Steelville will soon be advertising the availability of the old San Val building. Aldermen agreed at Monday’s city council meeting to purchase a banner to install in front of the former factory to begin the process of letting the public know it could be utilized. Comptroller Jennifer Basham also pointed out that there are websites that allow government entities to post such items at no cost.

School district receives donation from bank

    The July meeting of the Steelville Board of Education was held Thursday, July 17. The following business was conducted:
    • Peggy Alexander of First Community National Bank presented the Board with a check for $1,756.74 from the Cardinal Debit Card program.

Riverat Challenge to raise funds for track

    A new type of physical challenge is coming to the area to help raise funds for the Steelville Community Park track. The first Riverat Challenge, which includes a two-mile run, two-mile kayak, and mud course, will be held in Steelville on September 13.
