Library tax put on August ballot
A new library tax will be put on the August ballot for operating costs of the James Memorial Public Library. After looking at ways to fund the new city-operated facility, the library board determined that a tax would be necessary to keep the facility maintained. The library has been selling library cards to generate revenue, but that revenue will not be enough to keep the facility open.
Former alderman dies
Former St. James City Alderman Joe Alexander died suddenly on May 11. Alexander had been a longtime supporter of the city and the Veterans Home throughout his years. He was 77.
Vandalism reported at park
Recent vandalism at the Scouts Lodge in the St. James Park has led to discussion on increasing security to the area. The facility has, in recent weeks, had windows broken out and graffiti painted on the side of the building. St. James Police officers are investigating the crime and city officials will be looking to make the area more secure.
Wizards thrill crowd, PTO
The Harlem Wizards came to St. James April 30 to take on the St. James Hoop Stars, a team made up of alumni, faculty and coaches. Sponsored by the PTO, the event drew a huge crowd and raised more than $5,000.
The Everbridge Mass Notification System is available for St. James residents to keep informed of severe weather, fires, road closures, gas leaks, and citywide emergencies. Residents can sign up for the system online or at the Municipal Center or Golden Age Center to receive notifications in the event of an emergency.
