Cuba woman publishes book of spiritual poetry

A Cuba writer has a new book of spiritual poetry being published, and to celebrate its release, a book signing event will be held on October 14. The event at Deer Creek Church is open to the public, and it serves as your opportunity to hear her poetry and purchase a paperback copy signed by the author.

Donna Jean Weber has lived in Cuba since 1999, and her newly-published book, a collection of poems titled “The Holy Spirit Whispers,” gathers together poetry she has written over a 40-year span. Weber said it was only after she had suffered terrible injuries from a car accident, one that required a two-year recovery effort, that she began writing again. Overcoming both a serious car accident and a battle with cancer drew her closer to God and led to her divine inspiration for new poems.

“I feel like God gave these poems to me,” said Weber. “When I write, it just seems to flow out of me and onto the paper. The title seems appropriate, because I felt like the Holy Spirit was speaking directly to me when I wrote the poems.”

Weber said she often finds inspiration in the middle of the night, and she has to get out of bed to start putting down the ideas on paper. What starts as one idea or line often ends up as a complete poem. She attributes it directly to the inspiration of God.

“I write down a lot of deep thoughts,” said the 72-year-old poet. “I always liked writing, but I never thought of it as something I would do in a professional way.” She said it was an encounter with an editor friend of hers that led to the poems being collected in book form.

“There are parables from the Bible that are put into poetry form. Some of my poems are testimonials about my healing experiences, and then there are poems on loneliness, loss, death, feeling like you’re a failure,” she said. “All of these themes are dealt with in a way that inspires you to carry on with life. I feel like they are poems for all ages, for all denominations and backgrounds, for both believers and non-believers.”

Most of the poems are written in a narrative, or story, form. There are a total of 50 poems, most of them averaging a length of 12 verses. “The Holy Spirit Whispers” was published by Gatekeeper Press, and copies of the paperback book arrived recently. The book is now available online at Amazon and Barnes & Noble, and can be found or ordered at most brick and mortar bookstores.
