Mary E. Spurgeon of California, Missouri, formerly of St. James, Missouri, was born April 4, 1927 in Leeton, Missouri to Frank G. and Edith E. Williams Cooper and passed away Thursday, December 13, 2018 at the age of 91 years.
On June 27, 1948 in Kansas City, Missouri she married James M. Spurgeon.
Mary graduated from Leeton High School and then attended Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, Missouri, where she studied Library Science. She also enjoyed teaching and taught at Star, High Gate and Miles Country Schools. She worked at the Missouri Veterans Home and for many years at the Rolla Regional Diagnostic Center. After retirement she worked part time as a librarian for both the St. James Schools and the James Memorial Library. She loved to grow roses and work in her yard and would often have block parties.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James M. Spurgeon on May 31, 1990.
She is survived by one son, Norman F. Spurgeon and wife Linda of St. James, Missouri; one daughter, Rita Cheryl Keith and husband Tom of Henley, Missouri; six grandchildren, Laura, Jon, Nathan, Christina, Ashley and Erin; 13 great grandchildren, Aubrey, Brynlee, Cooper, Jeremy, Megan, Lainey, Savanah, Madison, Paige, Caydee, Emma, Anna and Landon; other relatives and friends.
Visitation was held from 9-11 a.m. on Monday, December 17, 2018 at the Jones Funeral Home in St. James, Missouri.
Funeral service was held at 11 a.m. on Monday December 17, 2018 at the Jones Funeral Home in St. James, Missouri with Don Carson officiating. Stephen Brubaker was the vocalist with Jason Jungemeyer as organist.
Burial was in the St. James Cemetery.
