Race to the Rocker making big changes for 2019

After 10 years of successfully racing to the giant rocking chair at Fanning, Cuba’s renowned footrace along historic Route 66 will take on both a new route and name in 2019. The Route 66 Race to the Rocker is now being called Running the Rails on Route 66, and it will feature a new four-mile route through downtown Cuba and a one-mile fun run specifically for kids.

The committee that organizes the Race to the Rocker announced that “after 10 great years, it was time to try something new. Our main goal has always been to promote health, fitness, and community.” According to a committee press release, the same committee members, corporate sponsors and timing company will be involved with Running the Rails on Route 66, which is scheduled to take place in downtown Cuba on Saturday, March 23. Registration for the race is now open.

Proceeds from the race will again be donated to Cuba community and school improvement projects. Fees for adults (four-mile run) are $25 if registered by March 1 or $30 after March 1. Registration for children ages 13 and under is $15. Race shirts are included with the fee, but cannot be guaranteed to arrive for registrations after March 1.

Both runners and walkers are welcome to participate in the four-mile race. Animals and bikes are prohibited. Jogging strollers carrying infants and toddlers will be permitted.

There is no registration fee for the new one-mile fun run for kids.

Teams of at least five racers may also register to qualify for the traveling team plaque. No limit on the number of racers per team, but the minimum to qualify is five runners. Only the top five finishers will score in the final standings. A trophy will be given to the largest team to register.

Awards will take place shortly after the race is over. It includes a $250 cash prize to the faster runner to break a 19:55 time (for men) or 23:33 time (for women). First, second and third place awards for the top three overall male and female runners, along with top three awards for both the men and women in each age division.

You may also enter the race with a team! Must be at least 5 racers on a team to qualify for the TRAVELING TEAM PLAQUE. There can be unlimited members on a team, but only the top five finishers will earn points. We will also issue a trophy for the largest team. You must be a paid participant to be eligible for the team trophies.

All registrants who are pre-registered will also be eligible for prizes donated by area sponsors.
