Joseph “Joe” C. Hammonds


    Joseph “Joe” C. Hammonds of Steelville, Missouri was born in Sligo, Missouri on Thursday, October 13, 1932 to Lawrence Alfonso and Anna June Schermesser Hammonds and passed away Monday, January 21, 2019 at the age of 86 years, 3 months and 8 days.


    Joe graduated from Cherryville High School as a member of the Class of 1951.  Right out of school, he joined the United States Air Force where he served his country during the Korean War and was honorably discharged.  
    He married Delores Aleen Roberts on July 6, 1954.
    Joe and Delores lived in Texas until he was discharged and then moved to St. Louis, Missouri where he worked at McDonnell Douglas from 1954 to 1961.  They then returned to Steelville, Missouri where he worked several jobs such as Steelville Manufacturing, for Warren Parrett and then at Earl Chevrolet as service manager for a while.  He bought the old Standard Station in 1979, which they called Hammonds Service and closed it in 1992.  
    Joe worked as maintenance at Steelville Schools for 10 years until he retired.  He also served on the school board for many years.  He was an active member of the Sligo United Methodist Church and the American Legion Post #345.  
    When Joe was younger he played sports in school and even later in life enjoyed bowling.  Joe liked to eat steak and loved to go fishing and hunting.  He enjoyed watching RFD TV and listening to country music and riding four-wheelers around the farm with the kids.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Anna Hammonds; parents-in-law, Clarence and Gladys (Briggs) Roberts; brother, Jack Hammonds; and sister-in-law, Koradine (Tom) Rhinehart.
    He is survived by his wife, Delores Hammonds of Steelville, Missouri; sons, Rick (Cindy) Hammonds, Steve (Tammy) Hammonds and Rodney Hammonds, all of Steelville, Missouri; grandchildren, Matt (Sarah) Hammonds, Mike (Sarah) Hammonds and Megan Hammonds, all of Steelville, Missouri, Morgan (Wade) London of Cuba, Missouri and Mark (Melissa) Hammonds of Leslie, Missouri; great grandchildren, Huntley and Lila Hammonds of Steelville, Missouri, Hutson Hammonds of Steelville, Missouri, Walker London of Cuba, Missouri and Blakely Hammonds on the way; sisters-in-law, Helen Roberts of Steelville, Missouri and Carol Hammonds of O’Fallon, Missouri; other relatives and friends.
    Visitation was 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 and funeral service at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 24, 2019 at the Hutson Funeral Home, Steelville, Missouri with Pastor Jeanette Boyce officiating.  
    Burial was at the Keysville Cemetery, Steelville, Missouri.
