Steelville’s annual Empty Bowls event to help feed the hungry in our community will be held on Thursday, March 7, beginning at 6 p.m. at the high school. Tickets are $12 at the door, and that gets attendees a delicious soup dinner and dessert, in addition to a handmade bowl to take home.
The evening includes a live auction, live music, and good company for a great cause! All proceeds go to the Steelville Ministerial Alliance for the Steelville Food Pantry. This annual event is hosted this year by the Ozark Potters Guild and the Steelville Ministerial Alliance.
Empty Bowls fundraisers are held around the world, and each is based on the idea of allowing participating artistsand groups to create and donate bowls, then serve a simple meal. In some communities, ceramicartists are joined by wood turners, glassblowers, fiber artists, metal smiths, painters, sculptors, and other artists and craftspeople.
Guests who attend the events choose a handmade bowl to keep as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. One hundred percent of each meal’s proceeds are devoted to local hunger-fighting organizations, such as food banksor soup kitchens, or to national or international charitable groups.
In Steelville, those who attend also have the opportunity to bid on other donated artworks during the auction that follows the meal. All money raised through the entry ticket sales and the auction goes to the local food pantry.
Empty Bowls events around the world are sponsored by local pottersand artists organizations, churches, community service organizations and schools. The goal of these events is to raise money to feed the world’s hungry people, increase awareness of hunger and related issues, and advocate for arts education.
