Fine Linen Theatre is excited to announce the opening of the Broadway smash musical Newsie. Based on the 1992 Disney movie, Newsies is about the real-life Newboys strike of 1899. This exceptionally popular Broadway musical was the winner of the 2012 Tony Awards for Best Score and Best Choreography.
The show has lyrics by Jack Feldman (Lion King II, and “Copacabana”), book by Harvey Feirstein, and music by the incredible Alan Menken (Little Shop of Horrors, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Enchanted, Tangled and others.) The Tony award winning score features the now classic songs “Carrying the Banner,” Seize the Day,” and “Sante Fe.”
The true story of the 1899 Newsboy’s Strike revolves around a youth-led campaign to force change in the way that Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst’s newspapers compensated their child labor force of newspaper hawkers. The strike involved thousands of “newsies” and was successful in forcing the World and Journal to offer full buy-backs to their sellers, thus increasing the amount of money that newsies received for their work.
Fine Linen’s production includes 52 cast members on stage, 13 musicians in the pit orchestra, and a talented group of technicians and crew. The production features high energy choreography, fantastic vocals, an impressive set, iconic costumes, and a true story that uplifts and encourages.
Performances are at Leach Theatre, Castleman Hall, on the Missouri S & T campus, opening Thursday, March 28, and running March 28, 29, 30, April 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, with performances at 7 p.m. and an additional 2 p.m. matinee on the Saturday, March 30.
