Memorial Day observed in Steelville - PHOTO GALLERY

A dedicated few gathered on the Crawford County Courthouse steps to observe Memorial Day on Thursday, May 30. The short ceremony included prayers from Steelville Assembly of God Pastor Jerry Beers and reflections on the day from veterans Don Gummersheimer and Jim Cain. Cain reminded those present that May 30 is the date that was first established at the conclusion of the War between the States in 1868, as a day set aside to honor the nation’s Civil War dead by decorating their graves with flowers. “And today, as it was in 1868, we honor our fallen heroes,” Cain said. “The men and women who have upheld the principles of the United States of America, and have paid for it with their lives on battlefields here and all across the world, deserve our everlasting gratitude, and deserve every true American’s deepest respect.”
