Horses for Heroes will help a local veteran

The St. James Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 5608 will be hosting its first Horses for Heroes event Saturday, June 15 at the St. James City Park. Proceeds from the event will aid local veteran Don “Grandpa” Casteel with medical expenses.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. near the baseball field behind Tiger Shark Waterpark. Charlie Van Dien will have his Clydesdale horses at the event and participants can ride for $3 each. A bounce house will be set up for children to enjoy for $1 per child and there will be a dunk tank on site with members of the St. James Police Department in the tank. Dunks changes will be sold for $1 for one or $2 for three attempts.
Food will be available for purchase, with members of the VFW serving hamburgers and hot dogs, along with soda and water. The price of food is still to be determined.
Sunny 104.5 will be on site doing a live broadcast and will be awarding gift prizes from 10 a.m. until noon. The VFW will be holding a 50/50 raffle, with 50 percent of what is raised going towards Casteel and the rest to be given to the winner. Tickets will be sold for $1 for one or six for $5.
Casteel is a local veteran and a member of the VFW Auxiliary. He has also served for over 20 years in the VFW Honor Guard and members of the organization hope to have a large turnout to help him with his expenses.
