County fair offers a ‘passport to fun’ in July

A county fair season pass will serve as your “passport to fun” when the Crawford County Fair returns to Hood Park in July. County residents won’t have to travel far for good food, great entertainment for the entire family, and a whole lot of pageantry at this year’s fair. It will take place at Hood Park in Cuba from Tuesday, July 9 through Saturday, July 13, and this report contains a daily list of the key fair events and start times throughout fair week.

On Tuesday, July 9, the gates at Hood Park will open at 2 p.m. Daily admission is $20. The cured ham and bacon judging will begin at 3 p.m. and is open to the public. At 6 p.m., the Crawford County Fair Parade will begin, following a parade route through town along Route 66 to the fairgrounds. Carnival rides will then open at the midway from 6 to 10 p.m. Cody Johnson is set to perform on the Main Stage at 9 p.m., making up for his cancelled performance last year due to poor weather conditions.

Wednesday, July 10, is “Family Fun Night,” and gate admission is free that night. It will be the last day to purchase a season pass for fair week at the gate. Visitors can purchase arm bands for carnival rides for $20 at the midway, and the midway is open from 6 to 10 p.m. The Children’s Pageant for children 6 months to 4 years of age will be held on the Main Stage, with registration at 6 p.m. and the competition starting at 6:30 p.m. The annual Horse and Pony Show will begin at 6 p.m. at the Ed Mitchell Arena adjacent to the livestock show arena. At 7 p.m., both the Super Farmer Contest and Queen Talent Contest will take place. The Queen Talent Contest will be on the Main Stage, and the Super Farmer Contest is at the Main Arena. Blake Beckett will perform on the Main Stage at 8 p.m., and the Queen Coronation will be at the Main Stage at 9 p.m.

Gates open at 6:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 11, and daily admission will be $15. Market hog, Pee wee piggy, and class swine shows will start at 7 a.m., with awards following the conclusion of the shows. Sheep and goat judging begins at 1 p.m.; and at 3:30 p.m., the Dairy Cattle Show will begin, followed by the Bucket Calf Show at 4 p.m., the Crossbred Heifer Show at 4:30 p.m., and the Market Steer Show at 5:30 p.m.. Showmanship awards will follow. Carnival rides will be open on Thursday from 6 to 10:30 p.m. at the midway area. The Prince and Princess Contest will take place on the Main Stage at 7 p.m., with the Truck and Tractor Pull also starting place at the same time at the Main Arena. The Youth Pageant will be at the Main Stage, with an 8:30 p.m. start time.

On Friday, July 12, fair gates will open to the public at 8 a.m. The Poultry Show will begin at 9 a.m., with awards to follow, and the Rabbit Show will begin at 10 a.m. The Open Beef Show will also take place at 10 a.m. in the livestock area. Junior livestock judging will start at 11:30 a.m. Carnival rides are going on Friday from 6 to 11 p.m. At 5:30 p.m., the Classic and Antique Tractor Show will take place in the Main Arena area. The Pedal Tractor Pull for kids will also take place at 5:30 p.m. in front of the food stand. At 7 p.m., more tractor pulls get going at the Main Arena. Local band Alderwood will be playing on the Beer Garden Stage from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., and Scotty Bratcher will close out the night with a performance on the Main Stage at 9 p.m.

Gates open at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 13, the final day of the fair. Daily admission is $25, with carnival rides operating from noon until 4 p.m. The Logging Rodeo will begin at 9 a.m. in the area around the Main Arena. The livestock buyers luncheon will is from noon until 1 p.m., followed by the livestock auction with a 1 p.m. start time. Carnival rides at the midway will reopen at 6 p.m. and go until 11 p.m. Championship bull riding will take place in the Main Arena at 7 p.m., and Alderwood performs again on the Beer Garden Stage from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Cameron DuBois will be on the Main Stage at 7:30 p.m., followed by Justin McCormick at 8 p.m. and Saturday’s headliner act, the Josh Abbott Band, at 9 p.m. Alderwood comes back for another late-night set at the Beer Garden at 10:30 p.m.
