Edward Lee Campbell


    Edward Lee Campbell of Steelville, Missouri was born in Cherryville, Missouri on Friday, September 26, 1924 to Francis Marion and Margaret Sarah Wilkinson Campbell and passed away on Saturday, July 20, 2019 at the age of 94 years, 9 months and 24 days.


    Edward grew up in Cherryville, Missouri where he attended Valley Side School and later attended Steelville High School. He had to quit school after 10th grade to make a living for his parents and siblings on the family farm while four of his brothers were gone to war defending their country. While he was in school he was active in baseball and track.
    He married Fern L. Walker on September 29, 1945 in Steelville, Missouri by Rev. Sam Roper.
    Shortly after they were married, they moved to St. Louis, Missouri where Edward worked for Wagner Electric. Fern mentioned Edward got “country fever” so they returned to Steelville, Missouri in 1953 and he worked at Brown Shoe as a heel sander until he retired in 1986.
    Edward came to know Christ at an early age. He was a member of Liberty Methodist Church in Steelville, Missouri where he served on the Church and Cemetery Board for many years. He later attended Steelville Presbyterian Church.
    Edward continued to play baseball into adulthood, he was on a team while working at Wagner Electric and a fast-pitch softball team at Brown Shoe. He was a St. Louis Cardinal fan. He enjoyed raising beagle dogs to hunt rabbits and enjoyed fishing and gigging. He and Fern liked to go camping at Pomme de Terre and Truman Lake. He liked collecting coins and clocks and he had a room where he liked to display his collection of antique items.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Margaret Campbell; parents-in-law, James and Zula Walker; brothers, Everett (Fae) Campbell, Glenn (Sibyl) Campbell, Delmar Campbell, James (Fern) Campbell and Kenneth Campbell; sisters, Vivian (Henry) Slovensky and Jane (Lester) Gray; sisters-in-law, Wilma (Fred) McCoy, Betty Garms and Dorothy Walker; brothers-in-law, Gerald Stephens, Woodrow (Edna Lee) Walker and Clyde Dunlap; and son-in-law, Darel James;
    He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Fern Campbell of Steelville, Missouri; daughter, Donna James of St. James, Missouri; grandchildren, Melissa (Dale) Riley of St. James, Missouri and Bradley (Kirsteen) James of Wentzville, Missouri; step grandson, Daren (Juli) James of Columbia, Missouri; great grandchildren, Trey and Caleb Riley of St. James, Missouri, Madelyn, Katelyn and Makenzie James of Wentzville, Missouri; step great grandchildren, Daniel and Brianne James of Columbia, Missouri; sister, Mary Stephens of Salem, Missouri; brothers-in-law, Bill Walker and Jay Garms, both of Steelville, Missouri; other relatives and friends.
    Visitation was from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, July 22, 2019 at the Hutson Funeral Home in Steelville, Missouri.
    Funeral service was at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 23, 2019 at the Hutson Funeral Home in Steelville, Missouri with Rev. Jerry Beers officiating.
    Burial was at the Liberty Cemetery in Steelville, Missouri.
