Volleyball team looking for double digits in wins this season

The St. James High School volleyball team hopes to break into the double digits in victories this season after flirting with the number a year ago. St. James was scheduled to open its schedule Wednesday of this week, hosting Salem at 5:30 p.m.

Due to the flooding of the Donati Gym at St. James High School, all Lady Tiger volleyball matches will be held at the St. James Middle School this season.
STJ comes into this fall coming off an improved 9-17-1 record from 2018. From that squad returns five varsity lettermen, although there will be a lot of underclassmen in the varsity rotation.
“Everything has been going pretty well,” said St. James head coach Julie Guese. “The girls and coaches are excited. We have only two seniors, and only one with varsity experience. We’ve added a foreign exchange student and are excited to have her.”
The Lady Tiger setters are juniors Mackenna Rodgers and Caily Sanders. Senior Francesca Migliori, the foreign exchange student, junior Makayla Case, and Rodgers are outside hitters. Middle hitters were juniors Hannah Marcee and Shelby Marcee. Sophomore Allana Chitwood is the right-side hitter. On the back row are junior Emma Carroll and senior Justus Ellis. Others in the varsity rotation are freshman Alex Sparks at hitter/back row, freshman Rylee Hancock at setter and sophomore Kira Gordon at middle hitter.
“I feel like our passing should be a lot better than in the past,” Guese said. “Also we have a few strong hitters. You hope the offense will be good with that passing. And I think the defense will be better. We have a really strong junior group, some who got a lot of really good club time in.”
Defending Class 2 state champion Hermann was the unbeaten Four Rivers Conference titlist, while Sullivan was second at 6-1 and Pacific third at 5-2.
“Hermann will definitely be one of the teams to beat,” Guese said of the FRC race. “Sullivan and Pacific will be really tough again. We would love to pull off wins against Owensville and Union. Hermann is always top of the line.”
St. James is part of Class 3 District 8, along with Salem, Owensville, Pacific, St. Clair, St. Francis Borgia and Sullivan. Sullivan is the defending district champion.
