October will feature three great art events in Steelville

Did someone say art?  Go no further than Steelville for three unique and exciting offerings for the month of October, all sponsored by the Steelville Arts Council.

On Saturday, October 5 the arts council will host a fundraiser at the Meramec Music Theater – an “Art of the Car” Cruise-in.

Cruise-ins are great places to look at classic and muscle cars and visit with the owners. What makes this cruise-in stand out from the norm is the addition of a contest for artists who will be there painting pictures of the classic cars.

This 1st annual car cruise-in, hosted by the Steelville Arts Council, will be a full day of cars, painting, and food, and will end with a concert at the Meramec Music Theater. Butchwax and the Hollywoods, a group of entertainers from the St. Louis area who play 50's and 60's rock n roll music, will perform on the theater stage. Tickets for the concert are available online at www.meramecmusictheater.com or by calling 573-775-5599.

Festivities begin at 12:30 and, for those strolling around the grounds, there will be the opportunity to purchase pulled pork sandwiches provided by Mo Hick’s BBQ of Cuba, beer and Ritas, along with tickets for a 50/50 drawing. There will also be an information tent about how to become a volunteer with the Steelville Arts Council. Paintings will be judged at 3:30 p.m., and the concert begins at 4 p.m.

This fundraiser for the arts council will help with maintenance of the Meramec Music Theater, Gallery Zeke Art Gallery, and Heartland Arts Gifts and Gallery. In addition, profits will support the various programs and events furthering the mission of STARCO to bring art to the community.

Colors of the Ozarks, historic sites, waterways, hills and bluffs will all be highlighted by artists coming to Steelville for the Fall Plein Air event. This event will take place from October 9 to 12.

The public is invited to come to Gallery Zeke each day, Wednesday through Friday, to delight in what the artists have painted that day, and on previous days.   The gallery will be open daily between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. At that time, the gallery will be closed for judging, opening again to the public about 6:30 p.m. to share the results.

Following the announcement of the results, all are invited to join the artists each day for a reception at the Evans House, located at 303 West Main Street. Light appetizers will be served along with non-alcoholic drinks and adult beverages, too. This will be a great social time for artists, patrons and volunteers. Find them in the pavilion behind the house, weather permitting.

Another chance to see amazing, unique art and meet the artists is Sale Day, Saturday, October 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Gallery Zeke. This event offers the opportunity to surround yourself with fresh images of your community. You may even see something that will want to go home with you.  Many of the artists will also choose to leave their work on display at the gallery until October 27.

Completing this fantastic October line up to tantalize your senses will be the unique gallery exhibit:  Ekphrasis.

Two years ago, a challenge to artists went out. The challenge was to create a work of art inspired by another form of art. This other form can include poems, songs, books, music, and any of the visual arts. The artwork could be two-dimensional or three-dimensional and could include drawings, paintings, mixed media and sculptures done in any medium. It is exciting to see how different artists will interpret their favorite poem, song, book, etc.

The arts council invites you to view these wonderfully unique art works from October 17 through November 2 at Gallery Zeke. There will be a reception from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 19 for patrons to meet and greet the artists of this exhibit.

This exhibit will be open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Gallery Zeke is located at 106 Main Street in Steelville.

The Steelville Arts Council was created in 2010 as a 501C3 nonprofit organization. Its mission is to promote arts in the community through awareness, appreciation, education and support, creating a connection between artists and audiences to enrich the quality of life for all.
