The Second Annual Race to End Alzheimer’s 5K will be held on Saturday, April 11, and registration is open to those wanting to participate in this year’s event. The event will raise money for the local Walk to End Alzheimer’s Association. Last year, the first event raised more than $1,000 and organizer Julie Felan hopes to build on that success.

Registration opened in January and will continue until the day of the event. Those wanting to receive a T-shirt with their registration, however, have until March 20 to guarantee one is available. A packet pickup event will be held on April 8 at the James Memorial Public Library from 6 to 8 p.m. for those who wish to pick up their bibs and shirts.
“Something new we added this year, not only will there be a 5K, but kids 12 and under can participate in a kid’s race one-mile (race). We are keeping (the event) at the same location on East Springfield,” Felan said. Last year, several kids ran with their parents or family members, leading Felan to conceive of the idea of offering them a race to participate in as well.
Split Second Timing will be providing timing for the race, and those who wish to have their race timed are encouraged to register as soon as possible to guarantee an electronic bib for the race.
Felan said registration will remain open for non-competitive racers until two days prior to the event, but will T-shirts will not be guaranteed as there will only be enough printed for those who have signed up by the deadline.
Competitive racers will be put at the front of the pack during the event with walkers and non-competitive racers taking up the rear. The route will begin on East Springfield Street, turning on to North Springfield, and wrapping around St. Francis Avenue, and back to East Springfield. Registration on the morning of the event will begin at 8 a.m. The race will begin at 9 a.m.
Prizes will be given for first and second place overall, as well as in age categories. “We are doing first overall male and female. We don’t know what our prize will be yet, but they will get a grand prize and a plaque,” Felan said.
Children running in the kid’s race will receive a participation medal. The overall winners will not be eligible for age category prizes and ages will include 19 years and under, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, and 60 years old and up. Cost of entry will be $25 for runners and $20 for walkers until March 20, at which time runner’s costs will increase to $30. Kids running will be $10 to race or $15 to race and receive a shirt.
“We had 35 participants last year. Our goal was 100, but I would love us to get 50 this year,” Felan said. Felan added she already has enough sponsors for this year’s event and believes this year is going to be extremely positive for those participating for a good cause.
Volunteers are also being accepted for the event and can help along the route, directing runners along, at the food and refreshment table at the end of the race, and helping with setup and cleanup before and after the race.
Anyone interested in getting registered can do so at www.racetoendalz.itsyourrace.com or by contacting Julie Felan at 573-263-1120 to learn more, become a sponsor, or to volunteer.
